Teeth whitening

Tooth whitening is one of the easiest ways to enhance your looks. It is a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. The degree of whiteness achieved will vary from patient to patient. Tooth Whitening will only lighten natural tooth substance. It will not work on any types of false tooth such as fillings, dentures, crowns and veneers.

This affordable treatment can help boost self-esteem and self-confidence. Many people often associate whiter smiles with being healthier and younger so it’s understandable that this is one of our most common cosmetic treatments.

Very few people have brilliant white teeth, and our teeth can also become more discoloured as we get older. Your teeth can also be stained on the surface through food and drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine and blackcurrant. Smoking can also stain teeth.

The ‘active ingredient’ in the product is usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. As the active ingredient is broken down, oxygen gets into the enamel on the teeth and the tooth colour is made lighter.

What happens?

The process begins with the construction of your custom-made whitening trays. Melissa will take impressions of your mouth so the whitening trays can be fabricated.

Once the whitening trays are completed she will check they are comfortable and that they fit tightly over your teeth, ensuring the whitening gel will not leak out.

You will be supplied with whitening gel and shown  how much gel to use in the trays, and how to correctly seat the trays in your mouth over your teeth so you get the best from this premium system.

All you need to do is to use the whitening trays for the prescribed amount of time each day. This could be just one hour or even overnight for just a couple of weeks.

It’s important to follow our instructions as they are designed to make sure you whiten safely and comfortably. If your teeth are particularly sensitive then we have special toothpastes and gels to help increase comfort during treatment.

Tooth whitening is not permanent. But all you need to do is maintain the results periodically, using your custom-made whitening trays and top up at home.

Possible side effects

Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Others may have discomfort in the gums, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing.
